Jinks Pottery School
Jinks Pottery is a community outreach teaching space in the heart of Brighton, created to offer a holistic, caring, calm and slow space to learn and experience clay.
We teach on only five wheels so that students receive the individual attention they need to feel held in every class.
Each person's progress is their own journey and their own experience. It is an honor to offer pottery and clay as a medium of growth.

In a taster session you will learn how to prep and manage your clay, how to centre clay on the wheel, to pull walls and form cylinders and bowls.
You will also learn about clay types, firing types, stages of clay and how a pottery studio functions.
You save your best pot; we trim, fire and glaze it for you in the studio. We’ll let you know when your pot is available for collection.
Tasters

The beginners six-week class is a perfect second step from the taster.
We examine in more depth: clay choices, throwing forms in weights and measurements, trimming and glazing, bowl shapes and plate forms, tea bowls and handles.
You get to trim and glaze your own pieces.
Beginners

The intermediate class further expands on throwing styles, hand holds, sizes of throwing, complex throwing such as closed forms and lidded jars. We look at slip application and more unusual glazing techniques.
This class is a perfect step up from beginners, and would prepare you for a life as a potter.

pay what you can
Once a month on a Monday, Mathew Paul Jinks opens the studio for a pay what you can wheel throwing session. These sessions are part of an ongoing commitment to making ceramics accessible to everyone, regardless of budget. Places are available on a first come first served basis — if this feels relevant to you, you are welcome to join.
more ways to learn...

Open Studio Practice
For existing students looking to build on their skills and get more time on the wheel, our open studio practice sessions are an ideal option.
A technician is on hand, though these sessions are practice time rather than taught classes — ideal for those who want to develop at their own pace in a working studio environment.
-
Sessions are available in 3-hour blocks at £10 per hour, bookable on an ad hoc basis throughout the week.

Private SOLO Classes
Solo one-to-one wheel throwing classes are an accelerated learning experience.
Tailored to advance your skills faster, classes take place on either electric or Leach kick wheels, and cater to you, your level, and your curiosity to develop bespoke knowledge - from throwing different forms to mastering trimming, glazing and firing techniques.
-
£360 for a 6-week course. Enquire to book.

Private Group Events
Private wheel throwing sessions are a wonderful shared experience, and can be booked with us for groups of up to five people.
Jinks Pottery classes can be tailored for bespoke group workshops, including for:
Corporate wellbeing sessions
Private celebrations
Young peoples' skills development

Men's Group
This group meets once a month on a Monday night and is focused on flow state throwing for men's health, which means that after we talk, we throw in silence.
The sessions promote a safe space to speak and share and learn to throw on the wheel, encouraging difficult conversation in a healing space. My desire to offer these sessions stems from my volunteering at Samaritans and my ongoing counselling training.
Please contact me if you would like to be included. These sessions are free and space is limited, you can book by emailing me.

Where to find us
Jinks Pottery is located inside Yoyo Yard - a haven of studios and sauna - tucked quietly behind the centre of Brighton's popular North Laine area. Look out for the big black gates, and step inside.
