About
Mathew Paul Jinks is a Brighton-based potter and artist whose practice is rooted in a long engagement with making, materials, and craft.
Trained in Fine Art Photography at The Glasgow School of Art and holding an MFA in Studio Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago, his background in fine art has always been anchored in a deep curiosity about how things are made and what they communicate as objects in the world.
After years working as an artist and educator in Chicago — including teaching positions at The Art Institute of Chicago and DePaul College of Digital Media — Mathew moved to New York, where he worked in media production at Comedy Central. It was during this period that he began throwing pots, taking his first wheel throwing classes at Greenwich House Pottery in the city.
What started as a counterpoint to screen-based work quickly became central to his practice — a return to the material, the process, and a respect for the ceremony of everyday objects.
He established his first pottery studio in Carbondale, Colorado in 2017, before returning to the UK and opening his current studio at YoYo Yards in Brighton in 2024. His ceramic work carries the sensibility of someone trained in fine art: attentive to form, surface, and the quiet presence pottery can hold.
Alongside his studio practice, Mathew teaches wheel throwing classes and runs community outreach sessions. Informed by volunteering as a Samaritan and the journey he is undertaking to train in counselling, Jinks Pottery School is committed both to instilling strong, practical wheel throwing technique, while also enabling more people to access the mental health benefits that working in a flow state with clay can bring.
