Mathew Paul Jinks:
An invitation to read from an immigrant's library
Organized by Michael Green
Sunday, June 10, 17 and 24, 2012, 12 - 3 PM
On three Sunday afternoons in June, the Comfort Station in
Logan Square will host Mathew Paul Jinks' new site-specific
work of performance and audience participation, An invitation
to read from an immigrant's library.
Jinks will transform the Comfort Station into a temporary
library, filled with literary works selected as personally
or culturally significant by immigrants in Chicago.
Viewers are invited to enter the library, don a mask,
and read from the chosen texts. The Comfort Station's
traditional role as a space of public dialogue for passing
pedestrians will be charged once more, as diverse readers
and texts come together in this empathetic and performative
act of oration. The readings will be guided by Jinks and
accompanied by a local Chicago musical improviser.
You are invited to listen.
You are invited to read.
Jinks will also exhibit a series of photographic prints
of classical Greek sculptures culled from the Art Institute's
disbanded slide library.
The photographs situate the readings theatrically, drawing
links between the ancient agora and contemporary sites of
public exchange and conversation.
